Before you start: what to have on the table
This section answers one question — what do I need in hand? Sorting the document, the address proof and the photo conditions first is far quicker than hunting for them with a half-filled form open.
Do first whatever somebody else has to give you
The order below is not arbitrary. What sets your pace is not the hard task, it is the one that depends on another party.
Of the four things to prepare, the address proof is the only one that can run into weeks. A bank statement downloads in seconds in Sydney or Johannesburg; a utility bill in your own name in Karachi or Nairobi can mean waiting for the next billing cycle, or getting the account switched out of a landlord’s name first. In India the document also has to be recent enough — the official validity table gives India two months, which quietly rules out that PDF from last winter. Choosing a document and finding decent light are a different kind of task: those are an afternoon.
Get the order wrong and the cost is concrete. You spend an evening reshooting your ID until it looks right, discover the next morning that nothing you own works as proof of address, and then wait a month anyway.
- Settle the address proof today. Check whether anything already on your phone qualifies. If it doesn’t, request it now and let it run in the background. Which documents count and how recent they must be is in what actually counts as proof of address; if the bill is in a parent’s or landlord’s name, start at proof of address not in your name.
- While that runs, decide which document you will use. Aadhaar, CNIC, a Smart ID card, a passport or a driving licence — the choice matters less for how easy it is to find than for whether the name printed on it matches what you will type. The trade-offs are in passport, ID card or driving licence.
- Photograph the document once the rest is in place. Nothing waits on this, so it loses nothing by going third. Do it first instead and you may reshoot anyway, because by then you have changed which document you are using. - Open the form last. With everything beside you, filling it in is copying. Start with gaps and you will get up mid-form to look for something, then re-enter the earlier fields from memory — which is where mismatches come from. The whole run-through is in what to prepare before you open an account.
If step one turns out to involve waiting, don’t sit on it. Steps two and three don’t depend on it at all. Do them while the document is on its way and you can submit the day it lands.
